Electronic Portfolios (also known as ePortfolios) are gaining recognition as a valuable tool for learners, instructors, and institutions. The Illinois Online Network (ION) is preparing to integrate ePortfolios into its Master Online Teaching Certificate in order to showcase and assess learning that occurs in the MVCR online courses. Higher education in the Arab World has witnessed two important developments during the past decade: a) a general and steady decline in the quality of the education offered by Arab institutions; b) the accelerating proliferation of American universities. The public widely believes that American universities provide a higher standard of learning than what is otherwise available. American institutions, however, also bring with them a suite of traditions and practices: the emphasis on general/liberal education, the development of critical thinking, transparency in administrative procedures in every area, and the principle of shared governance. Some segments of the Arab society, nevertheless, object to the presence of such “foreign bodies”, seeing in them a “cultural invasion” that affects the beliefs and behavior of those who attend them. In this webinar, we will discuss this phenomenon, considering the pros and cons of the trend, and focusing on some of the potential pitfalls that face this educational/cultural phenomenon.
